CHECK-IN
Publication
CHECK-IN is a publication that features articles from Southeast Asian artists, providing a platform to express their evolving practices in the past year.
Featuring over 40 stories, it was important to balance a comfortable reading length and enough space to let the passages breathe. The 9x9 grid I went with let me be flexible depending on the stories that were featured. Stories that were written by individuals utilised 5 columns of the text block, with spaces on the right hand side of images for captions. For more text heavy articles such as interviews and reports, I used an extra column to provide a more comfortable reading length with the picture captions below the images.
To create an interesting first impression upon the reader, I wanted a tactile quality to be present on the cover. Chalkboards were the inspiration behind the dark green paper stock used. The title and words were then printed with a single spot UV colour to let it stand out but also preserve the texture of the paper underneath. This ended up with the title having a chalk-like effect, tying the whole look of the cover together.
